In 1980, three young surfers from Southern California were trying to decide what to do with the rest of their lives. They decided to start a cookie company named Maui’s Chocolate Chip Cookies. Their little business venture didn't last long. When they burnt their first batch of cookies, they turned their attention to designing fashions for surfing and active sports. Maui and Sons became an instant hit!

And the cookie? It became an inspiration for the Maui and Sons Logo. Inside, you will see elements representing the earth, sea, sky and fire. It’s a celebration of the power of nature and a tribute to the amazing creativity in everything from Maui and Sons.

Inspired by the creative genius and founding partner artist Rick Rietveld, Maui and Sons as their new business was called, was launched with bold ideas, a few thousand dollars and a pair of madras surf shorts. Aggressively marketing their unique design to southern California surf shops and to local high schools, they broke all the rules of time. Everyone they asked told them that making their logo big and placing it on the back pocket was the wrong thing to do. But they did it anyway.

Founded in 1918 as an importer of sewing needles, American Needle has evolved over three generations into a world leader in headwear manufacturing.

Upon its inception as a family-owned business, the company quickly progressed into manufacturing headwear and millenary styles of all types. The factory, located on the North side of Chicago, hired skilled tailors, pattern makers, sewing machine operators and seamstresses. Their passion was for making new hat styles for new markets.

In 1946, the company approached the Chicago Cubs with the idea of selling fans baseball caps like the ones the players wore on the field. The Cubs agreed to the proposal, with the team’s ownership noting, “Who would want to buy the hats that the players are wearing?” The first run of Cubs hats sold out in one day and a second lot sold even faster. Based on these successes, the company would soon begin supplying caps to all Major League teams nationwide and years later, the NFL.

Today, American Needle is a third generation family business that continues to lead the industry with the design and manufacture of products that are admired by headwear connoisseurs around the world. American Needle holds licenses for major sports leagues and entertainment properties, as well as over 30 patents on design and manufacturing innovations.

We decided to take the day yesterday to head up to the city and say hello to some friends. Our first stop was in Colma to visit one of our favorite Bay area rappers, ABS. We hit up Faro for lunch and then made our way into the city to visit our friend John at Fully Laced. In case you don't know about these guys, they are doing big things across the board! They have one of the most comprehensive vintage and deadstock hat collections we have ever seen. We did some big time shopping and brought back many amazing hats, beanies, custom belts, and shoe laces to showcase at The Krate!

The new “IN DA FACE” Sweatshirt is based on Eddie Murphy’s classic 1988 comedy, Coming To America, where Murphy plays an African prince leaves his native Zamunda to escape an arranged marriage. The sweatshirt features Prince Akeem (Murphy) and his “baby sitter”, Simi (Arsenio Hall), decked out in late 80s street uniform of colorful varsity jackets, bedazzled with a ridiculous amount of pins, as seen in the infamous “Soul Glo” commercial scene.
